During illness, most people prefer to ask the doctor or buy medicine at a pharmacy.
The fact is that medicine for physical illness must not necessarily be a kind of drug. It could be just sleeping well instead.
However many people underestimate the negative impact of perceived physical and mental condition merely due to sleep deprivation effects.
Enough sleep can also be a reliever for a number of health problems. Don’t you believe?
Here are seven health disorders that can be treated with sleep, as reported by the Huffingtonpost on Monday (01/11/2013):
1. Weight Gain.
One of the sleep deprivation effects is gaining weight.
The body of people who have good sleeps would not store excess calories to add energy. This was confirmed by a study that said that children who had adequate hours of sleep required fewer calories. Similarly, adults who slept enough would tend to eat smaller portions of food than their colleagues who lacked sleep.
People who sleep quite well be wiser in choosing healthy foods. From a study it was found that people who lacked sleep tended to consume more high-calorie snacks and junk food than when they slept enough.
Not only that, people who slept and woke up at the same hour each day was also reported to have a number of lower body fat. All of these studies show the strong relationship between sleep and the hormones that regulate hunger.
2. The Risk of Diabetes.
Lack of sleep causes a person prone to hunger and love to eat sugar and fat -laden foods , and this triggers another problem, namely the risk of type 2 diabetes in people who are concerned .
A study in 2012 found the lack of sleep impaired the response of fat cells to insulin. No wonder after four consecutive nights experiencing sleep deprivation, participants’ insulin sensitivity decreased to 16 percent and a sensitivity of fat cells, they also dropped as much as 30 percent. This lead to obesity or diabetes prone participants .
For that, getting adequate hours of sleep is said would help postpone the aging process of metabolism ‘ of this kind.
3. Losing Interest in Love Making.
Site WebMD reported both men and women would tend to be lazy or not interested in having sex when they had insufficient sleep.
This means that there is not only an indication of the bad mood a person experiences and fatigue but also because of hormonal disorders. Some studies also found a link between sleep patterns with hormone testosterone in men, i.e. the lack of sleep lowers levels of the sex hormones. So you can imagine how large the sleep deprivation effects is.
4. Memory Decline.
Short hours of sleep means limiting the time of sleep that a person needs to acquire the most important phase in which rapid eye movement sleep (REM). The bad news, this is the closest phase that influences the improvement of learning and memory. So that is why people who sleep less will easily forget many things.
5. Frequent Colds.
Rather than increasing the intake of vitamin C (which actually has no effect whatsoever), it is better to satisfy your bedtime to prevent colds. According to a study conducted in 2009, people who slept up to 8 hours each night were three times less likely to get the flu than people who slept less than 7 hours.
6. Risk of Stroke.
Research conducted in 2012 found people who regularly slept less than six hours a night were at four times of risk of developing symptoms of a stroke than people who slept longer. This fact remains true for people who are not overweight or have a history of stroke though .
7. Risk of Cancer.
Lastly, the other side effects of lack of sleep is the increase of risk of having cancer. Although the relationship between sleep patterns with cancer is quite complicated, but in fact a lack of sleep can lead to the emergence of this chronic disease. One evidence was shown in a study in 2010 in which the people who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer (colon and rectum), they averaged less than six hours of sleep each night.
Another study conducted in 2012 also found that women with breast cancer who slept less than six hours a night tend to be at risk of relapse with a more aggressive cancer.
“The problem is that the efforts to improve the duration and quality of sleep is always underrated as one way to reduce the risk of cancer”, said researcher Dr. Li Li, M.D. Ph.D.
